Cigarette Filter Sizes Explained: The Complete Guide

Walk into any tobacco shop and you'll find cigarettes in a bewildering variety of shapes, lengths, and diameters. For anyone looking to add a reusable filter like Tarmin Filters™ to their smoking routine, understanding which size fits which cigarette is the essential first step. This guide explains the major cigarette formats, their dimensions, and exactly which Tarmin filter model is designed for each.

The Three Main Cigarette Formats

Despite the huge number of cigarette brands on the market, virtually all cigarettes fall into one of three diameter categories:

1. Regular / Standard Cigarettes

The vast majority of cigarettes sold worldwide have an outer diameter of approximately 7.8–8.2 mm. This includes almost all king-size, 100mm, and standard-length cigarettes. Brands such as Marlboro Red, Camel, Winston, Lucky Strike, and HB all fall within this range. These cigarettes require Tarmin Standard.

2. Slim Cigarettes

Slim cigarettes have an outer diameter of approximately 5.3–5.7 mm. They are very popular in Europe, particularly among female smokers, and are offered by brands such as Marlboro Slims, Vogue, Virginia Slims, and various superslims from domestic European brands. These cigarettes require Tarmin Slim.

3. Superslim / Ultraslim Cigarettes

A minority of cigarettes fall below 5.3 mm in diameter. These include some boutique and fashion brands. Standard and Slim Tarmin filters do not fit these formats. If you smoke a superslim cigarette, please contact our support team; we are developing a Tarmin Micro variant expected in late 2026.

How to Measure Your Cigarette's Diameter

If you're unsure which category your cigarette falls into, here are three ways to check:

  1. Check the pack: Many cigarette packs print the filter diameter or tip circumference on the side panel or base. A circumference of 24–25 mm corresponds to a regular (7.9 mm diameter) cigarette; 17–18 mm corresponds to a slim.
  2. Use a coin: A standard €1 coin is 23.25 mm in diameter. Lay your cigarette next to it. If the cigarette looks clearly thinner, it's slim; if it's close to the same or slightly larger, it's regular.
  3. Use a ruler or calliper: The most accurate method. Measure across the widest point of the filter tip. Anything in the 7.8–8.2 mm range is regular; 5.3–5.7 mm is slim.

Why Filter Sizing Matters for Performance

A filter that doesn't fit properly creates air gaps around the cigarette tip, allowing unfiltered smoke to bypass the filtration media entirely. This can reduce effective filtration by 40–60% and makes the smoking experience feel loose and unsatisfying. Conversely, a filter that is too tight compresses the cigarette tip, restricts airflow, and can cause the tobacco to draw unevenly.

Tarmin Filters™ are precision-engineered with a flexible inner seal that accommodates minor diameter variations (±0.2 mm) while maintaining an airtight connection. This means that even if your specific cigarette brand sits at the edge of the standard or slim range, Tarmin will still perform optimally.

Filter Length and Cigarette Length

It's worth noting that cigarette length (the most common lengths are 70 mm, 84 mm/king-size, and 100 mm) does not affect which Tarmin model you need — only diameter matters. All Tarmin filters work equally well with standard, king-size, and 100mm cigarettes of the appropriate diameter.
