How TARMIN™ Professional Filters Work
TARMIN™ is designed for smokers who want professional-grade filtration without paying a premium price. Developed by the research team at IMF Traders GmbH, TARMIN™ combines three decades of tobacco-filtration research into a slim, easy-to-use filter that fits any standard cigarette.
The Problem with Built-In Cigarette Filters
Every cigarette contains a filter – but few smokers understand how ineffective it is. Studies by the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ, Heidelberg) have repeatedly shown that standard acetate filters deliver less than 20% reduction in inhaled tar particulates. This figure is even lower for light and slim cigarettes, where ventilation holes dilute the smoke stream rather than filtering it.
These ventilation holes – known as "filter vents" – were introduced in the 1970s to reduce measured tar yields in laboratory tests. In practice, smokers block these vents with their fingers or lips, eliminating the supposed benefit entirely. TARMIN™ bypasses this problem by adding a genuine multi-layer filter over the cigarette's existing tip.
TARMIN™ Triple-Layer Architecture
Where most add-on filters use two stages, TARMIN™ Professional uses three:
Layer 1: Coarse Particle Pre-Filter
The outermost layer intercepts large particulates (>10 microns): visible tar droplets, tobacco shreds, and combustion carbon particles. This coarse pre-filter protects the finer inner layers from clogging, extending overall filter life significantly.
Layer 2: Fine Fibre Matrix
The middle layer is a densely woven synthetic fibre matrix with an average pore size of 2–4 microns. This captures medium-sized aerosol particles that pass through the coarse pre-filter, including sub-visible tar aggregates and bacterial spores that colonise tobacco.
Layer 3: Activated Carbon Adsorption
The innermost core is packed with coconut-shell activated carbon – widely regarded as the highest-quality activated carbon type due to its exceptional micropore density. Coconut-shell carbon has a surface area of 1,000–1,500 m² per gram, enabling efficient adsorption of:
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene and toluene
- Aldehydes: formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein
- Hydrogen cyanide (HCN)
- Nicotine vapour phase components
- Residual tar compounds not captured by the mechanical layers
Measured Filtration Performance
| Compound | Standard Filter | TARMIN™ Professional |
|---|---|---|
| Total tar (TPM) | 15–18% | 60–70% |
| Nicotine | 12–15% | 48–58% |
| Carbon monoxide | <5% | 25–32% |
| Formaldehyde | <5% | 35–45% |
| Acrolein | <5% | 40–50% |
| Hydrogen cyanide | <2% | 20–30% |
Values represent typical performance under standardised smoking machine conditions (ISO 3308). Individual results vary.
Who Is TARMIN™ For?
TARMIN™ is positioned as the "professional" option for serious smokers who want maximum filtration at an accessible price. It is particularly suited to:
- Heavy smokers (20+ cigarettes/day) who inhale deeply
- Smokers of unfiltered or naturally grown tobaccos
- Cigar and pipe smokers who want occasional add-on filtration
- Smokers who want a cleaner, smoother smoke without changing their brand
Compatibility
TARMIN™ Professional fits all cigarettes with a standard 7.5–8.2 mm filter diameter. A slim version (5.2–5.6 mm) is available for slim cigarettes. TARMIN™ is not intended for e-cigarette or vaping devices.
Duration per Filter
Each TARMIN™ filter lasts 6–10 cigarettes under normal use. The triple-layer architecture gives TARMIN™ longer filter life than most 2-stage competitors. A pack of 8 TARMIN™ filters covers a typical smoker's needs for 2–3 days.
